On Saturday, students protesting from JNUSU and other universities were reported to have faced policemen deployed who resorted to lathi-charge, injuring many. The protest march started from Ambedkar Bhavan to the RSS headquarters in Jhandewalan drawing further heat on the #JusticeForRohith campaign. “They manhandled students and lathi-charged us but we won’t back down,” asserted one of the protesters.
The date, 30th January is the birth anniversary of Rohith Vemula which is co-incidentally also celebrated as Martyr’s day, on account of assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, whom the protesters claimed to be ‘victims of extremism.’
Amidst the chaos of blazing horns, heavy traffic and reverberating statements of “Comrade Rohith, tum zinda ho,” the roads became inaccessible to the general public. Many thronged the streets to witness the ‘procession’ and others remained undeterred. Said one lady, “Why so much security? The police didn’t allow me to visit the nearest temple.”
