JNU Inter-hostel Cricket Tournament 2016-17: Scorecard, Match Summary and Highlights of the Knockout Stage Matches

DSC_0689.JPG

19 October 2016 | The JNU Inter-Hostel Cricket Tournament 2016-17 is on in its full frenzy at the sports stadium. The tournament which started on 15 October 2016 saw ten teams participating in the competition: Sutlej, Jhelum, Narmada, Periyar, Kaveri, Tapti, Mahi-Mandavi, Lohit, Chandrabhaga and Brahmaputra.

Except for Periyar and Tapti, each team has played one match. Due to the lottery system that is being followed, Periyar and Tapti had to play two matches. Periyar won its initial match and lost the second, and thus, couldn’t find a place in the semi-finals. Tapti, who was till now being considered an underdog has won the both matches, and clearly seem to have a long way to go in the tournament. The teams that registered a win to make it to the semi-final are: Jhelum, Mahi Mandavi, Tapti and Chandrabhaga.

The first semi-final is scheduled to take place on 19 October 2016 at 1:30 PM between Jhelum and Tapti. The second semi-final match between Mahi Mandavi and Chandrabhaga is on 20 October at 1:30 PM at the stadium. The two teams that win will move on to the finals on 22 October 2016, at 10:00 AM at the sports stadium.

The ten teams had to go through a gruelling duel at the knock-out stage, where on the first day Tapti defeated Sutlej by 3 wickets, while chasing an easy target of 79 runs.

The second match of the day saw Periyar triumphing over Kaveri by 4 wickets. Having won the toss Periyar decided to field first. Kaveri charted 106 runs at the loss of 7 wickets, thanks to Abdul 32 (31) and Zubair 22 (19); the score compared to the previous match of the day appeared to be pretty dependable. On the other hand Periyar recovered quickly after the initial setback (there was a time when the score read 1-1) lead by the duo Kunal 18 (19) & Om Prakash 29 (31); the team cruised to a victory with further contributions from the lower order batsmen.

The third and the fourth matches of the knock-out stage were played on 16 October, Sunday between Jhelum and Naramada; and between Mahi Mandavi and Tapti. Experience came handy for the Jhelum players lead by the opening batsman Jainendra who is also the wicketkeeper of the JNU cricket team. They were clearly a better team in terms of bowling and fielding though Narmada did manage to upset the batting order just a wee bit at the end overs. Due credit must be given to the Narmada boys for the cavalier spirit with which they faced the challenge. Will the Jhelum batsmen be able to chart a different story in the semi-finals with Tapti? Only time will tell.

Later, on the lazy Sunday afternoon had the boys from Mahi Mandavi settled comfortably with a score of 114/6 which did seem like a Herculean task for the Lohit team. The opening batsman Varun scored 40 (34) and Ronit who came in third with a 26 (22) and also took 2 wickets were instrumental in MM’s win. Lohit it seems wasted a lot of time adjusting to the conditions. The result? Mahi Mandavi won by 21 runs.

Confident with their win on Saturday, Tapti took their Monday’s match against Brahmaputra a bit lightly initially. They won the toss and chose to bat; if not for Alyas’s impressive 57 from 34 balls, with an incredible 10 boundaries, Tapti might have landed in troubled waters. The first innings was a match between Alyas and the combined might of the Brahmaputra’s bowlers.   Brahmaputra lost its wickets all too soon, though Tapti’s bowler Dasharam (3 wickets for 7 runs in 3 overs) did have a hand in there. Tapti won by 20 runs

Yesterday’s match dashed Periyar’s hope to enter the semi-finals, after it lost the match to Chandrabhaga chasing the highest score set by any team till now in the tournament. Chandrabhaga charted  128/6; Periyar’s bowlers suffered at the hands of Chandrabhaga batsmen. Though it must be acknowledged the team suffered due to the lapses by its fielders; boundaries came in galore for Chandrabhaga. Ajay (30 runs from 28 balls), Vicky (28 runs from 22 balls) and Yasir (21 runs from 14 balls) did most of the damage. Periyar however went down swinging.

A handful of students can be seen sitting lounging in the stadium as they shout, cheer, applaud and root for their teams. These people are among the select coterie of active cricket enthusiasts, ex and current players in JNU, most of them familiar with each other and sharing a pleasant camaraderie while over the speaker the DJ-cum-commentator cracks them open with his match analysis interspersed with witty one-liners.

Below we present the scorecard of the teams in the six knockout-stage matches.
